Mario Kirner and his Friday The 13th Props Museum has been an essential reference for many fans of the films who wanted to dive deeper into the making of the franchise as well as learn more about collecting the historical artifacts of the pop culture phenomenon. We house many of the Props Museum photos and information right here on this website.

This past February the announcement was made that a brand new reference book was being put together of all of the Props and other screen used items in Mario’s possession. Today a small update was posted on the museum’s Facebook page with a surreal shot of numerous Jason cowls worn in different Friday The 13th films by the actors. Can you guess from which films these are from?

The book is progressing along nicely as Mario is prepping photos like the one above for the book. There is no release date as of yet, but the nice piece of news Mario revealed is that the book will have interviews with the crew who dealt with the Props on the various films! Stay tuned for more information on this exciting project.

We are proud to announce to publish a neat coffee table book containing the entire inventory with all new pics and never before seen details. The book will be available in a limited edition of only 100 prints world wide..

The book serves as collectible, reverence and "close at hand" version of the museum. It will contain hundreds of items like props, costumes, scripts and other stuff used during the acutal production of the films.

Behind The Scenes Images With Douglas Tait On 'Freddy vs Jason'

It was about ten years ago that I first discovered actor Douglas Tait was the third person to play Jason Voorhees in Freddy vs Jason. In fact, I was lucky enough to post some of the very first behind the scenes images of Doug as Jason in the film. Over the years, a number of these images were lost or scattered about the World Wide Web (and even this site). Since a new behind the scenes image from Doug's time on the film recently surfaced, it was decided that it would be a good idea to try and capture all of the images we have in one place.

Below are various behind the scenes photos of Douglas Tait as Jason Voorhees, which consisted of the final scene in the film where Jason emerges from the lake with Freddy's head. As you can see in the photos, Doug has a replica Freddy head attached to his hand for far away shots in the lake, and then Robert England himself was put to work with a green screen and Doug for the close-up where Freddy winks at the camera.

We will add more images to this post as we sift through the archives, but enjoy what we have below. Many of our readers have seen these photos by now, but there may be some fans that discover these for the first time.

To find out more about this end scene and how it was filmed, make sure to read our interview with Douglas Tait from a few years ago!

So Tommy and his friend go to the cemetery to dig up Jason’s grave. Unfortunately for Tommy, (and very unfortunately for his friend), instead of finding a rotting corpse, they discover a well-rested Jason who comes back from the dead for another bloody rampage.

Meet Jennifer Banko From ‘The New Blood’ This September

Friday The 13th Part 7: The New Blood delivered a fun versus film that didn’t include Freddy Kreuger. Kane Hodder’s performance as Jason Voorhees delivers the goods that fans expected and the paint by numbers formulaic slasher script gave everyone what they wanted in a Friday The 13th film.

Fans have been able to meet a number of the stars from the film in recent years, but one of the actors that is not always accessible is Jennifer Banko, who played young Tina in the opening of Part 7. However, now there is a great opportunity to meet her and collect an autograph and picture this September.

Jennifer will be attending the Cult Classic Convention the weekend of September 28-30, 2018 in Bastrop, Texas. This is an interesting destination for the convention as it is located in one of the shooting locations for Friday The 13th 2009.  You can attend the convention and visit shooting locations from a franchise film!

Upcoming Prop Auction Offering 'Jason Takes Manhattan' And 'Jason Goes To Hell' Items

Profiles In History specializes in auctioning off some of Hollywood's most infamous and treasured props and film related items to the public. For those fans and collectors that get excited at the prospect of owning film history, be prepared to purchase these type of items with a good chunk of your disposable income. Many items such as a screen used Friday The 13th machete or hockey mask can cost you thousands of dollars.

Between June 5th and June 8th, Profiles In History will be holding auctions for a large number of film props and memorabilia, but two items that will be of particular interest to our readers is screen-used Jason Voorhees costume items from Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan and a production-used Jason figure from Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday. There is history for each of these items, so let's start first with the Jason Takes Manhattan costume.

Seven years ago, we wrote about this exact costume as it was displayed at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Mario Kirner from the Friday The 13th Props Museum told us at the time that the shirt, pants, and shoe were legitimate matches as being screen used in Part 8, but as he spoke to the memorabilia manager of the restaurant chain at the time, it was revealed that the hockey mask is indeed a replica that was created to round out the display of the costume. Whomever ends up with this set hopefully is aware that the mask is not screen-used.

The Jason figure from Jason Goes To Hell was originally created to be used for the ending of the film where Jason is pulled underground and dragged to Hell. Unfortunately, budgetary issues and time constraints eliminated the figure from being used in the film. The raw footage of the figure and behind the scenes images can be found in Crystal Lake Memories the book and documentary.

There is a 400 page booklet containing all of the Hollywood film props up for auction, but the Friday The 13th items can be found on page 370. View the entire catalog now and see what other film props you would enjoy taking home.. If you don't want to search the catalog, we have screen captured the Friday The 13th items and posted below!

Friday The 13th Characters And How They Influenced The Film Franchise

$

0
Since there are twelve movies to choose from in the Friday the 13th film franchise, it can be difficult to sift through all of the characters and pick out which ones are the most memorable. Some characters in the franchise could be viewed as possibly the most influential in taking the franchise in a certain direction. There are those few characters that are easily recognizable and might very well be the living, breathing essence of what makes Friday the 13th the type of movie series it is.

Recurring characters would be the first to come to mind and you need look no further than Tommy Jarvis. His character spanned three films and is responsible for not only ending the original series of films with Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter, but also for creating the zombie Jason that dominated multiplexes in the late 1980’s. His story also spawned the murderous exploits of Roy Burns, and in doing so, completed a profound transition in the franchise to what we know it as today.

Prophets of Doom are littered throughout the series to this point and none are more recognizable than Crazy Ralph. “It’s got a death curse” is just as synonymous to the Friday the 13th films as Jason Voorhees himself or the "Ki Ki Ki Ma Ma Ma" as the signature sound of the franchise. There has also been quite the following for another Prophet of Doom with Abel from Friday The 13th Part 3. His brief appearance in the film and his cut scene later on in the story were merely an homage to Ralph, but the spirit of that type of character definitely defines the film series.

Perhaps you enjoy the outhouse exploits of Demon and his girlfriend Anita talking about “the snake that’s gonna crawl up that crapper and bite yo’ ass”. Those damn enchiladas were killer. Over the top characters are what make the tense moments in film more settling for certain viewers and that comic relief feeling is a key ingredient in the Friday the 13th saga. Ned dancing around with Indian feathers in the original 1980 film or Ted having Jeff’s truck towed in Friday The 13th Part 2are prime examples of this fact. Maybe lovable Shelly turning around with a porno mag when being asked for money struck your funny bone in the third movie? The endless laughs of the Ethel and Junior combo in Friday The 13th: A New Beginning alone allows for multiple viewing of their film.

The serious tone of the characters can also lend a powerful element to the films as well. In The Final Chapter, when Rob is being attacked in the basement and screaming his last words, “He’s killing me!”, chills can run down the audience's spine. The fact that we know as an audience that Rob was there to avenge his sister’s death makes us sympathize with his character. Mrs. Voorhees' poignant speech at the end of the original 1980 film where she explains why the camp should not be opened is actually quite moving. In an instant, you feel something for her character and her now iconic motives.

The newer films in the series offer more flashy characters. Telekinetic Tina lays waste to anything that emotionally angers her in Friday The 13th Part 7: The New Blood. Uncle Charles is the prototypical overbearing parental figure, and then some, in Friday The 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan. The film Jason Goes To Hell offers one of the more endearing and most overlooked characters in the franchise in bounty hunter Creighton Duke. His character should have been used in more installments. Marine Sergeant Brodski was possibly the lone stabilizing force in Jason X as his tough demeanor gave a formidable foe for Jason Voorhees. Jenna’s death in Friday The 13th 2009 was surprising and saddening for some as her character came off as one of the few likable in the film.

So you see, there are many different personalities present in the characters created within the Friday the 13th universe. Every fan has their favorite, but each character has had their hand in shaping the direction of the film franchise and how fans perceive the films. Which is your most memorable character and how do you feel they contributed to the mythos of Friday the 13th?

Memo From 1979 Surfaces That Could Sway Friday The 13th Rights Battle

$
0
0

As we wrote last summer, the ongoing litigation over the Friday The 13th film rights and their use in future films is front and center in the horror community. Original writer of the 1980 film, Victor Miller, filed a termination of rights in 2017 against usage of characters and other aspects of his original script which allow him to have full control of any elements of his script for future films. That termination is supposed to take place in 2018, but when Miller filed his termination of rights, longtime production company of the Friday films, Horror Inc, as well as Manny Films (Sean Cunningham) sued Victor claiming he was a work for hire writer and not elegible to file for the termination of rights.

If Victor wins his case, he wouldn’t get everything in the franchise that fans have come to know today from within the films. As mentioned in interviews with the Hollywood Reporter last year:

Bonnie Eskenazi, representing the producers (Horror, Inc):
Miller’s purported rights could only extend to those elements of the screenplays that he actually created. Here, it is undisputed that Miller did not create either the title 'Friday the 13th' or the 'Jason' character as a living adult monster who is the villainous killer in all of the eleven (11) sequels. Instead, Cunningham created the title 'Friday the 13th' and Miller created a 'Jason' character that died as a young boy due to the negligence of his camp counselors. Accordingly, Miller cannot claim any right to the title 'Friday the 13th,' or the ongoing 'Jason' character, or Jason’s iconic look of a man in a hockey mask carrying a machete.

Marc Toberoff, the attorney representing Victor Miller:
Whereas Miller will thereby recover the U.S. copyright to his original film treatment and screenplay this does not prevent the continued exploitation by Plaintiffs or their licensees of prior derivative works, including the 1980 film and its many sequels; it solely relates to new derivative works after the effective 2018 termination date," writes the attorney. "Furthermore, as the U.S. Copyright Act has no extra-territorial application, the foreign rights to Miller’s screenplay remain with Plaintiffs or their licensees.

The fear that has been echoed by our readers for almost a year is that a decision in Victor’s favor could fracture the franchise and conceivably there could be competing Friday films, one with the Friday The 13th title and another film with something completely different (Friday 13 would be a fun one). The prevailing thought is that it will never come to that as the lawsuit against Victor is pretty air tight. That was until a new revelation came to the forefront recently.

According to IPwire, Victor’s first draft may have been circulated before he signed an agreement with Sean Cunningham:

Miller wrote and provided a first draft to producer Sean Cunningham’s company without any contract or guarantee of payment, enabling Cunningham to raise money and attract talent to proceed with the project. The parties executed a screenwriting agreement on June 4, 1979, but newly discovered evidence suggests that Miller’s first draft was already complete prior to the date of that agreement. Specifically, a memo to Cunningham from his assistant documents a conversation with Tom Savini dated May 22, 1979

—its contents are significant because the assistant mentions that Tom requested to see a script and that she will send him the “first draft.” In addition, a letter addressed to Savini dated May 23 states, “I am enclosing the first draft of FRIDAY 13 [the working title at the time], as per our conversation yesterday.” This, of course, begs the existential question of how Cunningham’s assistant could have sent Savini the requested first draft script unless it had already been written.

This is an interesting development that was introduced late in litigation. If this is true, it would prove that Victor was not a work for hire employee and did indeed conceive of the story before being employed by Sean Cunningham. In affect, it could help dismiss the suit against Victor Miller and finally brings the rights issue to a close, or at least a negotiation of rights between all parties involved.

Artist JJ Harrison Has Voorhees Self Destruct

There have been numerous incarnations of Jason Voorhees over the course of twelve films. Each film brings a unique vision of what the character’s look and personality will be on display and every fan has their favorite version of Jason. Recently, artist JJ Harrison decided to add the Voorhees family to his series called “Self Destruct”, which poses the question of what would happen if all of the different Jason characters encountered each other?

The illustration below suggests that it would not be all handshakes and hugs as Harrison presents an all out melee of epic proportions. Even young Jason and Mrs. Voorhees suffer in the skirmish, but this is a fun project to look at and try and pick out all of the different versions of the Crystal Lake slasher that have appeared over the years. Even NES 8-bit Jason joins the festivities.

If you like this illustration, check out JJ Harrison’s tumblr page for more excellent work and other parts of the Self Destruct series.

This September fans can meet composer Harry Manferdini and actress Adrienne King at the New Jersey Horror Con in Atlantic City. The convention and film festival will take place the weekend of September 21-23 and you can find out more at the event’s website www.newjerseyhorrorcon.com.

There has been a lot of discussions among Friday the 13th fans about Marta Kober, who played Sandra in Friday the 13th Part 2. Marta seemed to just disappear from the entertainment business since the early 1990′s and really had not been heard from until her first convention appearance in August 2010. Since that time, there have been a handful of appearances that Marta has made and now there is a brand new opportunity to meet her.

Marta will be attending the Cult Classic Convention the weekend of September 28-30, 2018 in Bastrop, Texas. This is an interesting destination for the convention as it is located in one of the shooting locations for Friday The 13th 2009.  You can attend the convention and visit shooting locations from a franchise film!

Marta is joining fellow alumni Jennifer Banko from Friday a The Part 7 at the reunion, so make sure to visit www.cultclassicconvention.com for ticket information.

I have attended a lot of screenings of Friday The 13th films over the years, but the information that was just passed along to our website ranks up near the top as one of the coolest venues to watch a franchise move ever. This July 13th you can watch Friday The 13th 1980 on the flight deck of the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier! The Intrepid was decommissioned in 1974 and now is home to New York City’s Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Complex, which is an educational and cultural non-profit institution centered on the aircraft carrier.

The museum just kicked off their new Summer Movie Series season this week and will be showing the original franchise film for free on a first come, first serve basis.

Watch a movie on the ship’s flight deck, under the stars! Enjoy views of the Hudson River and city skyline while you watch some old and new favorites on the big screen. Admission tickets (free of charge) will be distributed first-come, first-served before the show.

The flight deck opens at 7:00pm, and the movie begins at sunset, weather permitting. Space is limited. Alcohol is not permitted, doors close at 8:30pm.

Museum members can reserve a certain number of tickets now. If you live in New York or are thinking about visiting this summer, this screening would be an awesome screening to attend. Thanks to Vincent McKeever for letting us know about the event.

Fangoria Magazine And Friday The 13th: Issue #12, Friday The 13th Part 2

$

0
Continuing our look at the relationship of Fangoria Magazine and the Friday the 13th franchise, today's article examines issue #12 and Friday The 13th Part 2. The magazine offers some intriguing insight into the creation of one of the most unexpected Horror sequels to be released in the early 1980's. With the demented Mrs. Voorhees beheaded at the end of Friday The 13th 1980, it seemed as though the curse was over at Crystal Lake. Box office profits made studio executives think otherwise.

In issue #12, Fangoria interviews Director Steve Miner about his feature directorial debut and the challenges that went into making a sequel to one of the most successful independent films of all time. Miner explains that the biggest challenge was losing most of the original crew members from the previous film since Paramount and Georgetown Pictures wanted to fast track a sequel immediately, those crew members had already committed to other projects. The article also touches on the fact that Miner was able to get Betsy Palmer to return.
Another coup for Miner was his success in signing Betsy Palmer for a return appearance in the sequel, despite the letter writing campaign stirred up by Chicago critic Gene Siskel, who encouraged his readers to write to Betsy Palmer at her home town to express their shock at her participating in such a film. The scene that features her cameo appearance is one of the best of the entire movie.
The article also dives into the special effects and how Tom Savini was unavailable for the blood and guts of the death scenes due to his work on The Burning, so Steve Miner enlisted the help of Carl Fullerton to create the spectacular demises of the new victims of the franchise. Of course, most of that work was never seen due to the MPAA, and that is touched upon in the issue as well.

One solution to the possible MPAA problem was to release Friday The 13th Part II without a rating. But while small distributors can afford to release their films without the MPAA’s approval, Paramount Pictures cannot, since it would cause them political problems with their other, larger budgeted productions.
A major is always much more effective in releasing a movie,” answers Miner. “They have the money for advertising and the ability to line up an incredible number of theatres. But I guess it’s too early to say. My answer would really have to be based on how much we have to cut in order to get the ‘R’ rating. It would obviously be a shame if whatever trimming we have to do ends up hurting Friday The 13th Part II. It would be sad not to release a film in its most effective form. But Paramount has brilliant marketing and they’re the best people to distribute this picture. We’ll have to wait and see.
There are some great on set pics in the issue for the film as well, so this is highly recommended if you can get your hands on this issue of the magazine and enjoy it in a retrospective look at one of the most adored films in the franchise. Big thanks to Gene at DecayNY Entertainment for high resolution scans.
