Famous Monsters Reflects on Original Friday the 13th Soundtrack

Forrest J Ackerman’s long running magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland continues to entertain genre fans with nostalgic reminiscing on creatures and boogeymen who’ve been frightening filmgoers since the creation of the art form.  With issue 275, listed as September/October but available now on newsstands, the touted “World’s First Monster Fan Magazine” is no exception with an awe-inspiring newsstand cover celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ivan Reitman’s Ghostbusters and especially for a great look back on the original Friday the 13thsoundtrack!
Contributing writer D.M. Cunningham (no relation) reflects back with great praise on the composition and long lasting impact of Harry Manfredini’s work on the 1980 surprise hit slasher.  In the article entitled “Terror by Design: Six Stabbing Syllables,” Cunningham interviews Manfredini himself on the inspiration of his composition, including the creation of the legendary Ki Ki Ki Ma Ma Ma theme.  Reflecting on his work, Manfredini discusses his intention of personifying the unseen killer through the theme while also providing a lush and sometimes deceiving soundtrack to the picture.

To further the discussion, Cunningham also interviews original stars Adrienne King (Alice Hardy) and Ari Lehman (Jason Voorhees) who both disclose the first time they viewed the film with soundtrack and it’s lasting legacy in the film world.

The article offers both insight and well deserved praise for Manfredini’s often overlooked contribution to the history of film soundtracks, rightfully positioning it in impact with other classics such as Psycho, Jaws and Halloween and arguing for Manfredini’s deserved position amongst other celebrated composers as John Williams.
Famous Monsters #275 is well worth its cover price for not only the great Friday piece, but also engaging explorations of Ghostbusters with many unseen set photos, a retrospective on the original Planet of the Apes series (an alternate Apes cover is also available), a remembrance piece on classic Universal actress Carla Laemmle, and many more.

Top 3 Best Death Scenes Of 'Friday The 13th Part 3'

Our "Top" lists series continues today as we have decided to put together our Top 3 Best death scenes in Friday The 13th Part 3! This was a hard list to put together as there are so many memorable scenes where Jason dispatches of his victims. Our readers may or may not agree with our rankings, but the third film in the franchise contains a number of classic death scenes that could be ranked higher than what we have listed below.

3. Rick Pops His Top

Friday The 13th Part 3 may be the ultimate audience participation film found in the franchise with so many iconic characters, famous lines, and legendary death scenes. It was hard to pick the three best, but the first death scene to stick out in my mind was Rick's head popping scene, literally at the hands of Jason Voorhees. The overall scene is short with not as much build-up as other scenes we cover for these lists, but it is the one time Jason is shown restraining a would-be victim to avoid detection before killing them. The kill is pretty awesome too!

After Rick and Chris arrive back at Higgins Haven after dark, they enter the main house to find popcorn burning on the stove and no sign of any of Chris's friends. Anxious to go investigate and find out what is going on, Rick goes outside without Chris to look for the friends. Chris follows mere seconds behind him and opens the front door to the house. She calls out for Rick with no response back from him. The camera pans right to the side of the house to show that Jason has Rick wrapped tightly in his arms, with his hand over Rick's mouth to not allow him to warn Chris. After Chris closes the door, Jason puts his hands on each side of Rick's head and lifts his body up off of the ground, using his head, and squeezes with inhuman force until Rick's head is crushed and one eye ball pops out from his skull

2. Vera's Eye Hurts Peeking At Shelly's Wallet

Poor Vera became the object of affection of Shelly, thus she had to endure his ultimate scare prank of a psycho killer jumping out of a lake wearing a hockey mask and brandishing a harpoon gun. Pretty standard fare, would imagine, if you are as beautiful as Vera was. So when Vera scolded Shelly for his stunt and made him walk away in a sulking manner, she of course felt bad and opened his wallet that she had borrowed from him earlier in the day. You should never do that as you never know when that hockey masked killer may come back with a little vengeance in mind.

As Vera flips through the pictures in Shelly's wallet while sitting on the pier, she hears a noise behind her and begins to sit up. In doing so, she accidentally drops the wallet into the lake and cannot reach far enough to grab it. Vera decides to walk into the shallow portion of the lake and grab the wallet as it floats on the surface. After she picks the wallet up from the water, a hockey masked wearing figure appears on the pier and aims the harpoon gun at Vera. She pleads for the person to knock it off, as she now realizes it's not Shelly. Jason pulls the trigger on the gun and with tremendous 3D effect, the arrow lands straight in Vera's eye and her body falls into the lake

1. Walking On Your Hands Makes You Half The Man...

Admittedly, being able to consistently walk on your hands from room to room is pretty impressive, and might even be attractive to a certain kind of lady. Maybe that was Andy's thinking in Part 3 while he goes to talk to Debbie in the shower? All I know is that it sets you up for a pretty vulnerable and gruesome death at the hands of Jason Voorhees.

After Andy and Debbie have sex in a hammock, Debbie goes to take a shower. While she lathers up under the warm water, the camera slowly pans in on the shower curtain and her silhouette. Suddenly, something knocks up against the curtain rod and Andy's legs are revealed up in the air. Andy has been walking on his hands and asks Debbie is she wants a beer. Mean while, Jason has walked up the stairs to the second floor where the couple is talking. He stands against the hallway wall with machete in hand. Andy, still walking on his hands, moves right past Jason without even seeing him. Suddenly, Jason reveals himself in the middle of the hallway. Andy notices him only a second before Jason swings the machete towards his body and we see Andy's upper torso fall to the ground. Later it is revealed Andy was split in half.

There are many fan favorite death scenes within the film, but these three stand out to us. What are your favorites and how does our list compare to yours?

Jason's Jukebox: Track #6 Hard Rock Summer by Alice Cooper

$

Even the most heavily scored films always carry a secondary soundtrack; songs that play in the background usually as scene setters or shameless promotions for up and coming bands or rock stars.  The Friday flicks are no exception, with numerous songs littered through the series from both well established artists from Alice Cooper to The Hives to lesser known and never to be heard from again starlets.

And speaking of Mr. Cooper, today’s track is going to head back to Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI for a closer listen to one of his “other” offerings you could say.  It is well known and celebrated that Alice Cooper heavily contributed to the soundtrack for this fan favourite installment.  Alice’s “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” was not only written for the film, but used to promote it with both its cover art and video which featured Jason himself.  “Teenage Frankenstein” was also prominently featured in the flick, blasting in the RV as Court merrily drove through Forrest Green, only to be abruptly interrupted by Jason’s offering him a knife through the temple with the song amplifying the intensity of the scene and going on to become a Cooper Classic.
But there was one more offering from Alice featured in the movie which unjustly often goes overlooked.  “Hard Rock Summer” is a fun track that also amps up the excitement of the scene it is used in, blasting over Megan and Tommy’s reckless joyride while attempting to avoid the local police.  With the opening lyrics “I’m a rock and roll vagabond, I’m a streetwise runaway” Cooper gets the adrenaline pumping leading up to an anthem like chorus “You know I’ll be screamin’, hard rock summer!”  The offering perfectly matches both the scene and Megan Garris’ carefree attitude.

While as enjoyable as Cooper’s other two tracks from the film, “Hard Rock Summer” seems to get a bit less attention.  The track was not featured on an album until 1999 when the compilation collection of The Life and Crimes of Alice Cooper was released.  Regardless, many still hold the track in high regard as a Cooper classic and the tune perfectly represents the music of 1986.  Turn up your speakers and enjoy a listen below to the track:

And for those keeping track, here is the track-listing for or ongoing compilation of Jason’s Jukebox thus far:

Track #1: “J.J.’s Blues/Broken Dream” by Terry Crawford/Stan Meissner

Track #2: “Beginning of the End” by Spineshank

Track #3: “I’m No Animal” by Felony

Track #4: “Love is a Lie” by Lion

Track #5: “Sail Away Tiny Sparrow” by Harry Manfredini

Track #6: “Hard Rock Summer” by Alice Cooper

NECA Announces Nintendo 8-bit Mego Style Jason Voorhees!

All of our readers remember last year when NECA revealed they would be releasing a SDCC Exclusive figure of Jason Voorhees that would be painted as the classic Nintendo 8-bit figure from the 1988 video game. It was extremely limited and caused many fans to miss out on owning the legendary figure. 8-Bit Jason kicked off a very successful line of similarly themed figures of other classic Nintendo game figures for NECA and now the toy company has announced a Toys R Us exclusive Mego 8-bit Nintendo Jason Voorhees figure!

Randy Falk, NECA’s Director of Product Development, just revealed on Twitter that the company has shipped the new figure to Toys R Us stores. The figure looks very similar to the SDCC 2013 Classic Video Game Appearance Jason action figure. This new retro Mego-style figure features a real cloth outfit, glow in the dark features, and three deadly accessories – including an axe, machete, and speargun.

If you have a Twitter account, NECA asks that you post with #trujason and tell them where you found it. This will help collectors know when their local Toys R Us store has received their shipment. Good luck in finding the figure in stores!

One of the great things about being a collector in this film franchise hobby is seeing what is being used to promote films in other countries.

One of our long time friends, daizab, has been sharing items from his Japanese Friday the 13th collection for many years now and has shared some awesome marketing and promotional items created for the Japanese home video market. One of those items is a display for Japanese video stores for Friday The 13th Part 7: The New Blood. Below is a fold-out cardboard display that was used to promote the film in those stores. These photos show the front and back of the display as it is closed.

Notice on the photos below that the right side of the open display show promos for the previous five films in the Friday the 13th franchise. Since these films were distributed through CIC video, the original 1980 film does not appear as that film is distributed through Warner Brothers internationally on home video. Also, notice as you open the display that Jason's hockey mask appears, and as you open it all of the way the mask splits apart to reveal Jason's face! This is a great homage to the classic scene in the film when Tina uses her telekinetic power to unmask Jason.

Anyone who follows this website knows that we are big fans of Japanese promotional materials and this display does nothing to deter that thinking. Big thanks to daizab for the images! Enjoy the photos below and let us know what you think.

Behind The Scenes: Jason, Martin The Caretaker, And Kathleen

Martin the caretaker is one character that seemingly looks and sounds like a Prophet of Doom within the Friday The 13th film franchise, but really does not function in that role. Originally, the character was conceived as a buffer for the graves of Mrs. Voorhees and Jason between the audience and Jason's father Mr. Voorhees. Our story from a few years ago outlines the original ending of Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part 6 and Martin's involvement with Mr. Voorhees.

When the Jason Lives went into production, the original ending was dropped. Later, after filming commenced, producers wanted to add more death scenes into the movie and Martin was inserted into the movie once again for a memorable death scene along with two anonymous characters in the woods. Below, is a photo taken on set during the filming of Martin's death scene and his companion Kathleen.

This scene is one of the more memorable in the franchise for this writer and just another reason fans adore this film so much. "Kathleen, you led me astray. You're gonna be the death of me... but what a way to go."

Funko Releasing 8-Bit Nintendo Jason Voorhees ReAction Figure

This past February we brought our readers news about Funko and ReAction producing a brand new line of Horror inspired 3 and 3/4 inch retro figures from a wide array of genre films and, of course, Jason Voorhees was in the plans for the first run in stores. Those figures hit stores next month, but recently, Funko posted a photo on Twitter of their upcoming lineup of figures and something pretty awesome was spotted among the group of toys.

It looks as though Funko has jumped into the NES 8-bit retro figure game as there is a purple jump suit wearing Jason Voorhees in the photo, which should get fans exited. Soon, collectors will have more 8-bit NES Jason figures than any other rendition of the character! We will try and find out more about the figure in terms of price and release and will update this story when we find out more.

Top 3 Best Death Scenes Of 'Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part 6'

Our "Top" lists series continues today as we have decided to put together our Top 3 Best death scenes in Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part 6! This was a hard list to put together as there are so many memorable scenes where Jason dispatches of his victims. Our readers may or may not agree with our rankings, but the sixth film in the franchise contains a number of classic death scenes that could be ranked higher than what we have listed below.

3. Officer Thornton Is The Perfect Target Practice.

Jason Lives is close to having the best collection of death scenes in one Friday The 13th film out of all of the others in the franchise. It made picking the top three extremely difficult, but one death scene that stood out was the one where we get to see how good an aim Jason has become. Being a super zombie probably helps as Jason was not the best at hitting targets in previous films (His failed knife shot at Chris in Part 3 anyone?). So our number three death scene is the untimely demise of Officer Thornton.

Sheriff Garris and other policemen show up at Camp Forest Green to follow up on Tommy Jarvis' claim that Jason Voorhees is still alive. The three peace officers split up to check out the surrounding area of the camp and investigate any strange happenings. Thornton decides to walk the pier out into the lake and swings his flashlight into the boats and water. From a distance in the wooded area adjacent to the pier, Jason emerges to stalk Officer Thornton. As the policeman starts walking back to the beach and cabins, Jason slowly pulls out a metal dart from his survivalist utility belt, takes aim, and sharply throws the dart into the forehead of Thornton. The force of the impact of the dart thrusts his body backward into a boat that is docked on the pier effectively showing the strength and accuracy of a very determined Jason Voorhees.

2. Hawes' Heart Really Couldn't Take Anymore Of This

The long opening prologue of Jason Lives perfectly set the tone for the rest of the film as the gothic cemetery setting and resurrection of Jason Voorhees had the perfect blend of horror and comedy. However, it was the introduction of a more focused and powerful killer behind the hockey mask that truly set the bar higher than any of the previous films. That bar started with the death of Allen Hawes.

As the film opens, Tommy Jarvis and his friend Hawes are driving down a dirt road to get to the cemetery where Jason Voorhees is buried. Tommy's plan is to dig up Jason's corpse and set it on fire to get rid of him once and for all. After Tommy finishes digging, he reaches Jason's coffin and opens it to a flood of emotion of when his mom and vacationers died in The Final Chapter. After stabbing Jason's corpse in a fit of rage with a metal fence pole, he and Hawes walk away to get the gasoline. Lightning strikes the pole and resurrects Jason Voorhees. The killer lunges at Tommy and climbs out of the hole in the ground. Hawes runs away as Jason corners Tommy. As rain begins to fall to the ground, Tommy looks to be Jason's newest victim. Just as it seemed to be the end for Tommy, Hawes grabs a shovel and hits Jason in the back of the head. A very angry Jason turns around and shoves his hand and arm through Hawes' torso and rips out his heart!

The pure force and suddenness of Allen's death indeed set the tone for the movie that this Jason Voorhees was not to be messed with.

1. Paula Should Have Believed In Nancy's Monster

The Friday The 13th films are well known for the exotic and sometimes satisfying deaths of unpopular characters. Melissa in Friday The 13th Part 7: The New Blood got a nice axe to the face for her bitchy persona. Tamara in Friday The 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan was littered with multiple stab wounds and broken shards of glass over her body for pushing poor Rennie overboard on the S.S. Lazarus. But what did poor Paula do to deserve one of the worst deaths in the entire franchise? Her death scene is THE best and most classic franchise death in the film and showed that Jason still hadn't lost his touch when it came to stalking a victim at camp.

Paula takes little Nancy back to her cabin to put her to bed after she woke up afraid of another monster sighting. Of course, Paula brushes off her concerns, even when finding out out the phones don't work. After leaning over Nancy to give her a kiss, she stands up straight and the audience finds Jason staring at her through the window. As Paula walks through the children's cabin to exit outside, Jason slowly trails behind her while walking outside and peering at her through the multiple windows. Once Paula it outside she is startled by a number of strange noises. She runs to her cabin across the camp and closes the door. As she backs away from the door it suddenly swings open. Very scared, Paula slowly creeps toward the open door as the wind howls outside. Just as she puts her hand on the door knob to close the door, the wind quickly slams the door shut with just a crack open to the outside. Relieved it was just the wind, Paula starts to close the door completely and Jason suddenly bursts into the cabin and proceeds to slash and decimate the poor girl.

The brutality of the kill is only accented by the aftermath discovered by Sheriff Garris and his daughter Megan later in the film.

There are many fan favorite death scenes within the film, but these three stand out to us. What are your favorites and how does our list compare to yours?

Friday The 13th 2009 Film Score Underwhelmed And Disappointed Fans

$

0
Steve Jablonsky has created some of the best action music scores in recent years, topped off with his work in the Transformers film franchise. Perhaps, that's what was so surprising when he was chosen to score Friday The 13th 2009. Not that he was an out of left field choice as he had scored almost every Platinum Dunes film to that point and Steve also scored some of Michael Bay's directorial films as well. The reason it was surprising was that his style just does not seem to fit at all with a Friday The 13th film. After Friday The 13th was released in February of 2009, it was even more surprising that his score was so flat and felt like it was pushed to the background of the dialogue and action in scenes in the film.

Like I mentioned before, Steve has created some excellent scores in the past and I don't want to bash him as an artist, but something about his score for the latest Friday The 13th felt way off. Jablonsky's score is not terrible, but it under-performs in key moments of the film and seems to be rushed. Not that this writer disliked the score for Friday The 13th 2009 entirely, however, it did feel like he was somehow restricted in the majority of his composition. In fact, his score seems so limited that a full soundtrack score of his Friday the 13th music was never officially released! He has one track of score music on the film's official soundtrack while the rest of the music originates from artists that were littered throughout the movie. Even Steve's score for the following year's remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street received a full soundtrack score release!

Other films that Jablonsky has worked on seems to have given him the ability to open up his music to a lot more cues, which makes total sense considering the subject matter he has to work with. Steve could have created a pretty good score for the newest Friday The 13th movie, but one has to wonder if there were other forces involved that caused him to create the score that was used for the reboot in 2009? Could he have had limited time to get a score created, or did he just misinterpret the sound of the film franchise?

Friday The 13th Alumni To Create Horror 'Expendables' Film Titled 'The Survivors'

We are a little late to the game on reporting this news as it was announced a few days ago that actor turned Producer/Director William Butler (Michael, Friday The 13th Part 7: The New Blood) and his Transition Entertainment label are in pre-production on Horror themed The Expendables film that would put some of the genre's most beloved Final Girls and survivors against a nasty serial killer. Not only is a Friday The 13th alumni behind the creative process of making this new and exciting film, but, of course, there will be at least one Final Girl from the franchise acting in the film as well!

From Icons Of Fright
Butler and writer Patrick J. Doody (Beneath) are currently penning the story for “THE SURVIVORS” a horror-action feature-film about a multi-generational group of strong female survivors who decide to get revenge as they ban to together and turn the tables on legendary murderer who, during their youth pursued them all. After the killer resurfaces, the women make a pack to track him down and end his twenty-five year killing spree.

Starring in the project so far are an impressive cast of fan favorites including: Adrienne King (FRIDAY THE 13TH) Heather Langenkamp (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) Jordan Ladd (CABIN FEVER) Amanda Wyss (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) Deborah Foreman (WAXWORK, APRIL FOOLS DAY) and Patricia Tallman (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD ’90).

Butler is also meeting with with Amy Steel (FRIDAY THE 13th 2), P.J. Soles (HALLOWEEN), Kelli Maroney (NIGHT OF THE COMET), Tuesday Knight (NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST 4) and Lisa Wilcox (NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST 4/5), Beverly Randolph (RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD) in hopes they will also join the dream team.

This film, if put together properly, should be an awesome homage to the slasher genre of the 80's and a great way to celebrate the Final Girl character we love so much. Stay tuned for more details on this project in the near future.

Could the new Friday the 13th be Focusing on Jason's Younger Years?

$

0

Rumours and speculations continue to abound regarding Friday the 13th 2015.  Fans and journalists have been pondering continuously over format (found footage or 3D?), storylines (sequel or reboot?), cast (Derek Mears returning?) and every other potential detail, even if Jason Voorhees himself would return at all.

Brad Fuller, producer for Platinum Dunes who will be behind the next installment, continues to drop quotes that are both bereft of details but at the same time cryptic in that if you read between the lines they may say more than we realize.  Mid-summer 2014, Fuller made a statement that caused an internet fury by sounding as if it was not likely that Jason would be featured in the new chapter.  Fans ranted until Fuller clarified in early August that he had been somewhat misquoted and, as this site reported here, Fuller made clear that Jason would definitely be in the film or there would not be a new film.

Now, in clarification of his misquote, Fuller again makes a statement that may be eluding to the direction of the new film.  As reported by pop-culture site Kpopstarz.com, Fuller goes on to state that his earlier quote was in direct reference to the question of whether or not Friday the 13th 2009’s Jason actor Derek Mears would be returning behind the iconic hockey mask again and not if the Jason character would be featured.  He goes on to state that “I don’t know who would play Jason Voorhees because I don’t know what age he would be or how we would use him…I don’t know who the character is going to be, or at what point in his life we are going to be engaging him in…”

While this may at first appear to be yet another “no-news” news story, Fuller’s quote has led to even further speculation as to the direction of the new script.  Picked up on by such online movie sites as Moviepilot.com in their story "Which Jason Are We Getting In The New Friday The 13th Film?"  the question has now become, could the new flick be focusing on the younger years of Jason Voorhees?

Much like the recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise announcement that the next sequel in their cannon would focus on the teenage years of the Leatherface character, speculation that the new Friday could be focusing on the younger years of a junior Jason has begun to spread.  Moviepilot’s article poses the questions:
"Another option would be a very young Jason. Maybe in his teenage years? When he was just learning how to live on his own and make use of his surroundings. Maybe even his first kill could be included, how awesome would that be? To see Jason first find the sack mask would even be nice!
Maybe we could go younger, and have a first time look at Jason before drowning. Back when he was lonely and only interacted with the only person who cared for him, his mother."

So what do we think?  Could you be up for an exploration of the early years of Jason?? Leave your thoughts on the potential storyline below or in our Website Forum here.

Kane Hodder is one of the most beloved actors to be apart of the Friday The 13th film franchise and his performance as Jason Voorhees in four films will always be a benchmark for people who aspire to portray the character. Meeting Kane at conventions can be a thrilling experience as he treats the fans very well, but can also be just as intimidating without the hockey mask on as he was with it as part of the character.

Great news for fans of Kane now as he was just announced yesterday to be booked for a Maryland appearance!

Kane Hodder has just been added to the MONSTER MANIA 29 convention the weekend of October 3-5, 2014 in Hunt Valley, Maryland! For more information on the show, please visit their website at www.monstermania.net.

NECA Toys has been been pleasing many film and video game fans with their lines of figures over the last few years, especially in the retro market with the 8-bit Nintendo and Mego styled figures. Speaking of Mego, there has been two Jason Voorhees figures released to this point (Part 3, A New Beginning)  in the format with the Part 2 Jason on the way in September. Our readers, of course, have been wondering if fans will see more Jason Voorhees from NECA in the retro figure, and it looks as though we will soon.

According to Randy Faulk on the NECA Twitter account, we will see one or both renditions of Jason Voorhees from Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part 6 and Friday The 13th Part 7: The New Blood in 2015. Without question, these two versions of Jason represent the most popular of the character with the widest array of weapons and accessories to package.
